Why does the engine wear out?

Camshaft wear

In case of malfunction of other components affecting the operation of the engine, a complete disassembly of the power unit is not required. In this case, it will be enough to replace the damaged parts with refurbished or new ones.

In addition to operating conditions, the service life of an internal combustion engine depends on the quality of the structural materials from which its working elements are made. Therefore, when repairing an engine, you should not save on spare parts and you should use parts from trusted manufacturers. Otherwise, a breakdown may occur that will not allow repair work and you will have to purchase a new power unit.

When is engine repair needed?

On average, the service life of modern engines ranges from 150 to 250 thousand km. There are units that can overcome the milestone of 1 million km, but today such internal combustion engines are very rare. After the resource is depleted, the characteristics and power of the engine decrease, and a planned replacement of the main elements is required.

Signs for engine repair:

  • Decrease in power
  • Extraneous sounds during operation
  • Unstable operation of the internal combustion engine
  • Increased fuel and oil consumption
  • Mechanical damage to the engine, for example, a crack in the block
  • Frequent overheating
  • Low compression in cylinders
  • Excess gas in the crankcase
  • Spark plugs contaminated with oil and carbon deposits
  • Low oil pressure in the system

Stages of overhaul

The first stage of overhaul is disassembly and cleaning of the engine. Then you need to perform a troubleshooting, which includes an assessment of production, measuring clearances, checking the condition of the cylinder head, cylinder block and certain parts for defects and wear, etc. After that, the condition of the parts is compared with the factory tolerances.

Based on the results of the troubleshooting, a conclusion is made about which parts can be restored and which ones can be replaced. For example, when repairing a cylinder head, cracks are eliminated, planes are ground, valve guides are changed and their seats are restored, valves, hydraulic lifters and valve stem seals are replaced, a camshaft, pushers, etc. are repaired or purchased.
