The first tractor was produced in 1948 and was named Model 800. It was made entirely of aluminum, and the cab resembled a bubble in its shape. A few years later, the company commissioned a long-haul tractor, equipping it with a sleeping compartment. This truck has become the most sought after model, which has led to high sales growth and the company's reputation. Freightliner became one of the best car manufacturers in the United States, which interested Daimler-Benz, who could not start selling Mercedes-Benz trucks in the American market in any way. In 1981, Daimler and Freightliner join forces, and the latter becomes the richest company, the resources of which made it possible to produce huge volumes of units of equipment.
The company is engaged in the production of bonnet and cabover trucks, occupying a leading position among the heaviest class of vehicles. In 1997, the corporation buys out the truck division from Ford, and begins to produce them under the Sterling brand. Freightliner Trucks is currently the largest manufacturer of heavy trucks in the United States with more than 22,000 employees and an annual turnover of over $ 32 billion.
