John and Horace Dodge were the first co-owners of Ford, but in 1914 they began making cars under their own name. After the release of a number of sturdy but uninteresting cars, known as "reliable Dodge", the company in 1928 found itself under the wing of the Chrysler concern.
This step was part of the overall plan. The brand soon joined a group that included Chrysler, Dodge, De Soto and Plymouth. The engines, frames and bodies of the cars of these compartments were often the same. Over the years, the only difference between Dodge cars within Chrysler has been trim level and price. But in the 50s. the new V8 engines, dubbed the Red Ram, improved their image and became successful in sporting events. Dodge's reputation has grown markedly.
In the 60s. Customers loved the new compact Dodge Dart and its "GT" variants, but the peak of popularity came later with the advent of the Dodge Charger, the typical American muscle car. The Charger Daytona was especially successful. Like most American car companies, Dodge felt very confident and had a dealer network throughout the United States. The brand steadfastly held on to 6-7th places in terms of sales, usually following the Plymouth, but sometimes pulled ahead.
The 1970 Challenger coupe was late and failed to impact Mustang / Camaro / Firebird sales. In the 70s. Chrysler was in tremendous trouble, but Dodge kept it afloat by producing common family cars.
In the 80s. Chrysler's cars were significantly reduced in size, acquired front-wheel drive, and Dodge returned to the Daytona Coupe series. In the 90s. Dodge remained one of the most stable firms in North America. Its success was accompanied by various light trucks and station wagons with increased capacity, as well as the appearance of new passenger cars such as the Stratus Sedan and Coupe.
The renaissance of Dodge's post-war image began in 1952 with the release of a new V8 Red Ram with hemispherical combustion chambers, but it only developed 140 hp. and was capable of much more. The first representative of the Royal series appeared in 1954 and had a wheelbase of 3.05 m, but a few months later the more powerful and better equipped Custom Royal series was introduced.
These cars were also frame construction with torsion bar independent front suspension. The body design was created by Virgil Exner's group. The cars were distinguished by panoramic windshields and small rear "fins". Their size increased in subsequent years.
The 1955 model had a V8 engine (4.5 liters, 183 or 193 hp). In 1956, the car received a 4.5-liter (218 hp) or 5.3-liter engine (260 hp). In 1957, the wheelbase increased slightly, the fins "grew", and two years later the last Custom Royal was built. By this time, the car received the most powerful engine with a working volume of 6.4 liters (320 or 345 hp).
The company offered several body options. The most spectacular were the 2-door hard-top coupe and the convertible close to it. At the same time, a 4-door coupe with a hard top appeared, the body of which did not have B-pillars. When the windows of all the side doors were lowered, the body seemed completely open. The Custom Royal was typical of those years, expensive and heavy (curb weight up to 1725 kg), large car, well equipped and very fast on straight sections of the road. One American reviewer said of this car that everything except the ashtray is powered ...
Brakes and handling were common failures by European standards, but without a doubt the Americans loved this car. In the 1955 model year 89304 were sold, in 1956 - 49292 and in 1957 - 55149 Custom Royal. The most unsuccessful were 1958 (25112 units) and 1959 (21206).
In 1964, the Ford Mustang marked the beginning of the transition to compact cars. The first response from Chrysler was the Plymouth Barracuda. With the introduction of the Charger coupe in 1966, Dodge immediately raised the bar to new heights.
For the next four years, the model was sold only as a large and spacious 5-seater coupe, and the most powerful possible engine was a 7-liter engine with hemispherical combustion chambers (425 hp). The first Charger, with a base of 2.97 m, borrowed many body panels from the Coronet model , but at the same time had such a feature as a front fascia with headlights hidden behind it. The choice of V8 engines was wide. So, in 1966, five engines with a working volume of 5.2-7.0 liters with a capacity of 230-425 hp were offered, a number of gearboxes and several options for suspensions.
