ERROR CODES ON CUMMINS ENGINE

Popular CUMMINS engine models

The Cummins engine suite currently in production includes the most advanced in-line and V-type water-cooled diesel engines. Customers can choose from naturally aspirated engines or, in many cases, several types of turbocharged engines. Most of the engines produced are equipped with an optional air-to-air or water-to-water cooling system. The company has over 50 years of experience in the field of fuel injection technology and fuel delivery systems. Engines on all models are designed to provide optimum performance across the entire power range. Specific motor data is provided in the power table to help you select the motor for your needs.

New Cummins X12 and X15 Engines

The well-known manufacturer of engines for commercial vehicles and construction equipment Cummins has introduced a new line of Cummins X12 and X15 engines. The new models have shown higher efficiency and productivity compared to previous models. The name of the model has also changed: “IS” disappeared, leaving only the prefix “X” and the number of liters (12 or 15).

The X15 line will come in two versions. The more economical X15 Efficiency from 400 to 500 hp. designed for maximum fuel economy. Ranging from 485 to 605 h.p, the X15 Performance is perfect where extra torque and more power are required.

Research conducted at the X15 R&D Center in Ohio found that engine braking capabilities and throttle response were significantly better than its predecessor, the ISX15. Cummins engineers have optimized calibration software and air management systems for greater thermal efficiency. This increases productivity and reduces fuel consumption.

Vice President of Engineering Jim Fier said at the presentation that the company tried to use thermal energy as efficiently as possible. He explained that different valve timings have been set, different injection methods have been applied, which will save about 3% on fuel consumption compared to the ISX15 and more than 20% from the 2012 ISX15. In addition, the distance between maintenance has increased, for example, after an oil change, you can drive 50,000 miles, and a diesel particulate filter will need to be changed after 80,000 miles.

Cummins X12 and X15 Engine Calibration Innovations

An important advance is that you no longer need to go to the dealership to update the software or calibrate the X15 and X12 engines. All this will be done using the telematics platform. The person will be able to send the update to the truck from their computer and the driver will be prompted to approve and complete the calibration update. For safety, it will always be possible to make a backup if there are problems with the update.

Importantly, the new Cummins engines will exceed the efficiency commitments under the EPA / NHTSA phase of greenhouse gas emissions reduction regulations.

The new X15s are expected to go on sale in January 2017 and the company expects to produce around 1,400 of these engines in pre-production, roughly three times the volume for this phase. The x12 is due to hit the market in 2018.

Error codes are displayed on the instrument panel while the machine is moving. They are displayed either by flashing indicator lights, or, on more modern machines, on a digital display.

Indicator colors and names may vary depending on the manufacturer, but most often they are yellow, red and green and mean warning, stop, service.

The yellow warning light (WARNING) indicates that the fault must be repaired as soon as possible.

The red color (STOP) should be taken as a brake light. It indicates the need to turn off the engine as soon as possible and leave it off until the fault is rectified.

The MAINTENANCE light does not indicate an error, it simply indicates some technical aspects: water in the fuel filter, low coolant level, high coolant temperature, high air temperature or high oil temperature.

Turn the diagnostic switch to the OFF position and the diagnostic switch to the ON position to check for EFT and Engine Guardian DTCs. Turn the vehicle key to the ON position. If there are no active DTCs stored, then the yellow and red indicators will not appear. If there are active fault codes recorded, then flashing lights appear immediately. The digits of the fault codes flash in the following sequence: first, the warning light (yellow) flashes, highlighting the digit of the fault code. There is a short, 1- or 2-second pause, then the “Stop” signal (red) starts flashing. After a new pause, the warning light returns again. Thus, the signal change and the digital display of error codes are repeated.

To see the next fault code, move the switch to the "+" position. To return to the previous fault code, move the switch to the “-” position.

When you are finished with the diagnostic system, return the diagnostic switch to the off position.
